Hair Loss Myths

The truth about hair loss

Hair Loss Myths

Just as there are several legitimate reasons why people lose their hair, there are also many myths or false assumptions about hair loss. Most hair loss can be attributed to genetics. 80 Million Americans suffer from male pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss inherited from someone in their family.

For men, if hair loss is in the form of a receding hairline or thinning crown, it is most probable that this is caused by male pattern baldness which is genetic. Below are some examples of hair loss myths.

Myth #1: "Wearing a hat causes hair loss."

Some people believe that wearing a hat will cause hair loss. Wearing a hat, helmet, or cap does not cause hair loss. In rare cases, wearing a soiled dirty hat may cause a scalp fungus that could contribute to temporary hair loss. After the fungus is treated and removed, hair growth returns unless there was severe scarring or damage to the hair follicles caused by the fungus.

Myth #2: "You can only inherit baldness from your mother's side of the family."

Hair loss is inherited from both sides of the family. Not only can you inherit pattern baldness from your father's side, a woman can inherit pattern baldness from a man in her family history and a man can inherit pattern baldness from a woman in his family history.

Myth #3: "My father and Grandfathers had a full head of hair so it's impossible for me to inherit male pattern baldness."

Even if your parents or grandparents didn't experience hair loss, that doesn't mean you won't inherit pattern baldness from others in your family history. Genetic hair loss can skip generations.

Myth #4: "Don't drive with the windows or the top down because the wind makes you lose your hair."

Wind does not cause hair loss.

Myth #5: "I lost my hair from playing soccer...hitting the ball with my head rubbed off my hair."

Playing soccer or sports does not cause hair loss.

Myth #6: "I lost my hair because I was in the military and they always shaved my head."

Hair cuts or head shaving does not cause hair loss. Cutting hair also does not improve hair growth.
