Understanding the Cycle of Hair Growth and Hair Loss
The Cycle of Hair Growth
Growth Phase (Anagen)
The life of a hair begins by growing from a hair follicle beneath the skin. That hair will grow for an average of 2 to 8 years at about 1/2 inch (1cm) per month.
This is a 2-4 week transitional period when the hair stops growing because the hair follicle is detatched from the blood supply.
Resting Phase (Telogen)
At the end of it's growth cycle it will enter into a resting phase which lasts between 2 to 4 months. At the end of this phase, the hair is pushed out and a new hair replaces it.
Normal Hair Loss
You can expect to lose 50 to 100 hairs per day
Under normal conditions most people lose anywhere between 50 to 100 hairs a day. With approximately 100,000 hairs on the average person's head, this amount of loss is unnoticeable because new hairs are constantly growing in to replace those that fell out. Hair loss becomes noticeable when the number of hairs lost per day exceeds the number of new hairs that are growing in. Without preventative measures, over time, hair thinning and baldness will eventually occur.
The Most Common Cause of Hair Loss
80 Million Men and Women in the United States Suffer From Hair Loss Due to Hereditary Baldness
People begin losing their hair as early as 20 years old. 1 in 4 men start losing their hair by the time they are 30 years old. At 60, 2 in 3 men are balding or already bald. Although there are several causes of hair loss, the most common cause is genetic hair loss or male pattern baldness. If you are a man and are losing your hair in a specific area such as the temple area or crown it's probable that you are suffering from male pattern baldness. Hair loss due to diet, disease, side effects from medicine, or trauma would more likely result in hair loss all over the head.
Female pattern baldness in woman is much different than genetic hair loss in men. Female pattern baldness can result in hair loss on the top of the entire head. Whatever your reason for hair loss it is always recommended that you see a doctor as hair loss can be a symptom of over 30 diseases.
An excellent solution for those suffering from hair loss is a hair transplant. If you would like to speak to one of our staff members about the possibility of getting a hair transplant to solve your hair loss problems, please ask for a free consultation today!
